Refrigerant Propane

Propane (R290) is the best-known example of flammable refrigerants from the hydrocarbon (HC) group. With low single-digit GWP values, these are sustainable refrigeration solutions that can be used over the long term.

Their first-class refrigeration properties and high performance make hydrocarbons an excellent choice for a wide range of refrigeration applications.

The main areas of application for hydrocarbons, such as propane, are normal refrigeration, chillers, and heat pumps. To keep the refrigerant charge as low as possible, we rely on small refrigeration cycles, which we cleverly connect on the consumer side to achieve the required total output.

However, propane is classified as an A3 refrigerant and therefore requires a corresponding safety concept. Discover the benefits of a propane refrigeration solution for your cooling requirements.

Propane, also known as R290, is a natural refrigerant that is considered to be very climate-friendly. It has a global warming potential (GWP) of 3 and its impact on global warming is rather low compared to many synthetic refrigerants.

In addition to its low GWP, propane has excellent thermodynamic properties that make it an efficient refrigerant.

Propane (R290) is a flammable refrigerant and requires special safety measures. According to DIN EN 378 “Refrigeration systems and heat pumps”, it is assigned to the highest safety group: 3. The structural and safety measures to be observed contribute to the safety of these systems. Only trained personnel and service technicians may work with these machines.

In order to minimise risks, it is recommended that hydrocarbon-based refrigeration systems are installed and operated outdoors.
